The former location of the town hall, which was destroyed in WWII, had been an excavation site for 8 years before the city set up a design competition in 2003.
was chosen from over 50 competitors to redesign the central city square.
The winning design created an open green space for people to sit and relax on the benches under shady trees, and incorporated a circle to mark the position of the former town hall.
In 2004 the Prime Minister opened the newly built city centre.
